I feel privileged to work in one of the most exciting and dynamic professions in all of medicine. I remember when I was a medical student at Johns Hopkins; our professor, Sol Snyder, was just beginning to elucidate the role of neurotransmitters in the brain. Forty years later we are the benefactors of an explosion of discovery in the neurosciences. This bonanza of research has translated into a wide variety of safe, practical, beneficial treatments for mental health and addictive issues.
Still, despite the proven effectiveness of current evidence-based treatments, our interventions must be put in perspective. We cannot employ even the best scientific treatments for patients who continue unhealthy lifestyles, and expect good results. A holistic approach is needed, combining medical and psychotherapeutic interventions with healthy habits of exercise, diet, sleep and stress-reduction. Finally, we must recognize that each of us must pursue, in our own way, spiritual and humanitarian goals that give meaning to our existence. This essential component of well-being is too easily eclipsed by our hyper-connected technosphere which may leave a person feeling hollow and aimless.
If I have one regret, it is that, since Hurricane Katrina, I have had to limit my practice to psychiatric evaluation and medical management of children, adolescents and adults (excluding seniors). Fortunately, the clinicians at the Center provide a wide range of therapeutic skills. Collaboration and coordination of services among our providers promotes the best quality of care for our patients. Pursuit of every aspect of the best quality of care is the standard we continue to strive for.
